In a bid to empower conflict-affected girls and women in the Jakiri municipality, the SELF "Garden of Hope" training center has embarked on a mission to equip them with market-led skills essential for employment and livelihood strategies. Currently, the center is training 10 individuals between the ages of 18 and 30 in various disciplines including sewing, embroidery, fundamental literacy and numeracy, basic bookkeeping, and basic life skills.
The objective of this initiative is to enhance the economic empowerment of these women, ultimately fostering financial stability and self-reliance. The training program spans a duration of two years, during which participants will acquire essential skills to engage in viable employment opportunities.
However, the journey is not without its challenges. In addition to the prevalent insecurity in the region, the center faces limited resources to cover running costs such as trainers' wages, training materials, and procurement and maintenance of sewing machines and accessories.
Looking ahead, SELF Garden of Hope has ambitious plans to expand its impact. Future endeavors include increasing the number of market-led trades in the training plan, expanding the beneficiary pool, and ultimately transforming the center into a sustainable social enterprise capable of generating funds for its local running costs.
