Saika Elisabeth Foundation (SELF), in partnership with Street Child of Cameroon, is making significant strides in education accessibility for children in Yaounde. Through a comprehensive Back to School initiative, 110 out-of-school children were identified and registered, with 83 successfully enrolled in government primary schools within their neighborhoods.
This transformative initiative, which commenced on January 15th, 2024, aimed to dismantle barriers hindering children's access to education, including financial constraints and lack of school supplies. Through meticulous planning and community engagement, SELF cooperated with Street Child of Cameroon and identified children aged 5 to 13 who had not been enrolled in school since September 2023.
During a Back-to-School event held on January 30th, 2024, at the Bali Cultural Hall in Melen, Yaounde, grade-appropriate school materials were distributed to 83 children. These materials, including exercise books, pens, uniforms, and school bags, aim to equip children with the necessary tools for academic success.
Negotiations are currently underway with school authorities to ensure the seamless enrollment of all 83 children. Initial reports indicate promising progress, with the majority of children already enrolled and actively participating in their respective schools.
Despite these strides, challenges persist, including financial constraints hindering families from registering their children for examinations and paying PTA levies. Additionally, there are concerns about children residing in remote areas with limited access to government schools.
Key stakeholders, including Chief Amadou, Inspector of Basic Education Mr. Etoga Edward, and Headteacher of GBPS Mbankomo Mr. Ngeh Julius Epie, have voiced their support for the initiative, emphasizing the importance of inclusive education for all children.
In conclusion, SELF and Street Child of Cameroon's enrollment initiative is a beacon of hope for vulnerable children in Yaounde. However, sustained efforts and collaboration among education stakeholders, parents, and community members are crucial in ensuring universal access to quality education for every child. Please keep supporting our activities.
