The Saika Elisabeth Foundation (SELF), in partnership with the Canadian Funds for Local Initiatives, has successfully completed the first phase of its project aimed at restoring the dignity and well-being of girls and women in Jakiri municipality. This project, which focuses on training women to produce reusable sanitary pads and providing menstrual health education, has reached a significant milestone.
Key Achievements:
Training Completion: On September 28th, 2024, the two-month training program for 10 participants concluded. All trainees demonstrated proficiency in sewing reusable sanitary pads and reported increased confidence in menstrual health management.
Final Evaluation: A comprehensive evaluation on September 29th assessed both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. All participants passed, highlighting their competence in both areas.
Planning for Phase Two: A draft plan for the second phase was created on September 30th, outlining strategies to establish reusable pad production centers in eight villages, initiate menstrual health campaigns, and manage the distribution of pads.
Challenges and Solutions:
October 1st Tensions: Heightened security concerns due to regional unrest were anticipated for early October. To mitigate potential disruptions, materials and equipment for the next phase were procured ahead of schedule, and staff were advised to follow curfews and safety guidelines.
Insecurity in Project Villages: The presence of separatist fighters in some areas poses risks for sensitization campaigns. In response, local health centers have been engaged to identify community members who will safely lead these efforts.
Our next steps
From October 1st to 15th, the project will finalize the action plan for phase two, establish eight reusable pad production centers, and initiate menstrual health sensitization campaigns in two villages. Free reusable sanitary pads will be distributed, and education efforts will target the entire community.
The project is progressing well, with training completed and strong plans for the next phase. Despite challenges, proactive measures have ensured continued momentum. Community support and participant dedication will be key to sustaining the project's impact.
